In April this year we travelled about 1300 kilometres through the north-western Region of Vietnam. In eight days we drove through eight provinces and over 18 mountain passes in the Hoang Lien Son and Cao Nguyen mountain ranges (the French used to call those the Tonkinese Alps - not very creative if you ask me). We skirted Vietnam's highest peak - Mount Fansipan at 3,141 metres - and twice crossed northern Vietnam's second longest river: the Black or Da River (910 km).
The itinerary |
The roads were paved in 90 percent of cases and the quality ranged from "construction site mud tracks" to German standard state roads. Our car is a Toyota RAV4 (2001) without 4WD, but nonetheless completely adequate to the task. I did the driving and Susanne took pictures with here ever growing collection of cameras.

I hope you'll enjoy this travelogue and get an idea of the beautiful and exciting country we've been living in the last two years.
